12V vs 24V LED Strip Lights β What's the Difference?
Both 12V and 24V LED strips operate from suitable low-voltage power supplies, but they must be connected to their specified operating voltage.
For the same electrical power, a 24V lighting system draws half the current of a 12V system. This can help reduce voltage drop in supply cables when other conditions are equivalent.
| Feature | 12V LED Strip | 24V LED Strip |
|---|---|---|
| Operating voltage | 12V DC | 24V DC |
| Current at 120W | 10A | 5A |
| Power supply | Compatible 12V supply | Compatible 24V supply |
| Typical applications | Smaller systems and suitable 12V circuits | Residential and commercial LED lighting systems |
Important: A 24V strip is not automatically brighter, more efficient or suitable for a longer single-ended run. Actual performance and maximum supported lengths depend on product specifications.
Benefits of 24V LED Strip Lighting
- Lower current at equivalent power: Can reduce voltage-drop pressure in appropriately designed supply wiring.
- Flexible installation: Suitable for a variety of compatible recessed and surface-mounted applications.
- Dotless COB options: Smooth, uniform illumination for architectural lighting.
- Multiple lighting colours: Choose fixed white, RGB or tunable-white configurations.
- Controller compatibility: Compatible dimming and colour-control systems are available.
- Professional finish: Can be installed in suitable aluminium LED profiles.

Choosing the Correct 24V LED Strip Power Supply
A 24V LED strip requires a correctly rated 24V DC constant-voltage LED power supply. The power supply must have adequate capacity for the total connected load.
LED strip wattage per metre Γ installed length = total strip wattage
Example: 11W/m Γ 5 metres = 55W
A suitably rated 24V supply with approximately 75W continuous output capacity may be appropriate for this illustrative installation, subject to the manufacturer's requirements.
The example above applies to an 11W/m strip. Other products, including certain RGB+CCT strips, can have substantially different maximum power consumption.
Check the power supply's continuous output rating, environmental protection, permitted operating temperature, controller load and any necessary derating before installation.
Voltage Drop and Long 24V LED Strip Runs
Voltage drop occurs when electrical resistance in strip conductors and supply cables reduces the voltage reaching the LEDs.
Excessive voltage drop can cause reduced brightness and, on colour-changing installations, uneven colour output towards the end of a lighting run.
Longer 24V LED strip installations may require correctly sized cabling, additional parallel power feeds, separate power supplies or appropriate controller arrangements.
A product sold in a 10m, 20m, 50m or 100m total length does not necessarily support powering the entire length from one end. Follow manufacturer limits.
24V LED Strip Controllers and Dimming
Controller selection depends on the LED strip's channel configuration, voltage and electrical load.
- Single-colour controller: Suitable for compatible fixed-white LED tape.
- RGB controller: Controls red, green and blue colour channels.
- RGBW controller: Controls RGB plus a dedicated white channel.
- CCT controller: Controls compatible adjustable-white strips.
- RGB+CCT controller: Controls RGB plus dedicated warm-white and cool-white channels.
Make sure the controller is rated for 24V operation and the connected load. Different strip configurations are not automatically interchangeable.
Aluminium Profiles and LED Strip Installation
Suitable aluminium LED profiles provide a neat mounting surface, mechanical support and assistance with heat management. Diffusers can soften visible lighting and help provide a professional finish.
Choose an aluminium channel with sufficient internal width and depth for the actual LED strip and connections. Wider RGB+CCT tapes may require a larger profile than single-colour tape.
Cut the LED strip only at its designated cutting points and follow the manufacturer's bending and mounting instructions.
Indoor vs Outdoor 24V LED Strip Lights
An LED strip's voltage does not determine its waterproof protection. Always check the specified IP rating.
IP20: Generally suitable for appropriate dry indoor locations, without water protection.
IP65: Dust-tight and protected against water jets, subject to the product's installation guidance.
IP67: Dust-tight and protected against specified temporary immersion.
IP68: Dust-tight and rated for manufacturer-defined immersion conditions.
Drivers, cable joints and connections must also be protected appropriately. IP ratings alone do not establish suitability for vehicle loads, chemical exposure or every outdoor environment.
