Choose the correct white light

3000K warm white: cosy homes, bedrooms, restaurant details, media walls and living-room displays. 4000K neutral white: kitchens, worktops, wardrobe task areas, offices and commercial counters. 6500K cool white: a crisp daylight-style look for dry work areas and selected modern accents. Kelvin describes appearance, not brightness; all three featured products are rated 24V DC, 11W/m, 320 LEDs/m and IP20.

For a smooth professional finish, use appropriately sized aluminium LED profiles and verify the dimensions of the actual tape and fittings.

Driver sizing: do the calculation before you order

For the three featured 11W/m strips, calculate total strip watts = metres × 11. Allow sensible additional continuous-load capacity and confirm the driver maker’s derating, enclosure requirements and any controller rating. Longer runs need voltage-drop assessment and may need more than one electrical feed.

Installed length Nominal tape load Illustrative driver selection
1m 11W Suitable 24V, approx. 15W+ continuous
3m 33W Suitable 24V, approx. 40–50W+
5m 55W Suitable 24V, approx. 75W+
10m total 110W Suitable 24V, approx. 140–150W+, with approved split feeds
20m total 220W 24V supply provision approx. 275W+ total, split into suitable branches

These are illustrative capacity suggestions, not stock-specific recommendations or maximum one-end feed lengths. An electrician or competent installer should verify cable current, voltage drop, terminal ratings and electrical protection.

INSTALLATION ESSENTIALS

A reliable COB LED installation starts with five checks

Follow these principles before cutting, wiring or concealing any LED strip system.

  1. Match voltage. The linked strips use regulated 24V DC—not direct mains or an ordinary 12V adapter.
  2. Size the driver. Multiply the installed metres by 11W/m and allow suitable manufacturer-approved capacity headroom.
  3. Use appropriate profiles. Aluminium mounting channels support straight runs, heat transfer and a neat diffuser finish.
  4. Respect electrical limits. Cut only at marked points, respect permitted run lengths and keep longer feeds electrically appropriate.
  5. Protect the installation. IP20 strip is for dry locations; damp and wet spaces need a specifically suitable complete system.

TOPIC 01 / 10 • QUESTIONS 01–010

Understanding COB LED lighting

01What does COB stand for in LED strip lighting?

COB means Chip on Board. Many small LED semiconductor chips are mounted close together on a continuous circuit and covered by a light-converting coating. This produces a visually uniform luminous band rather than the distinct bright points often seen on low-density conventional LED tape. COB describes the LED construction, not its operating voltage, brightness, colour or waterproof rating.

02How does COB LED strip lighting work?

A compatible low-voltage driver converts the electrical supply to the specified DC voltage, usually 12V or 24V. Electricity passes through copper tracks and LED chips along the flexible circuit. The coating blends the light into a continuous line. The driver, cabling and any dimmer must match the strip electrical specification; the three featured Manningham strips operate on 24V constant-voltage DC.

03What is single colour COB LED strip lighting?

It is LED tape designed to emit one fixed white colour temperature, such as warm white 3000K, neutral white 4000K or cool white 6500K. Brightness may be adjustable using a compatible dimmer, but a single-colour strip cannot change from warm white to cool white. Colour-changing or adjustable-white installations require a different type of strip and controller.

04What are the advantages of COB LED strip lighting?

The main benefit is an even, nearly dot-free line of light, particularly visible when a strip runs along a shelf, aluminium diffuser or reflective kitchen worktop. COB tape also fits concealed architectural details and bends gently along suitable curves. Actual brightness, efficiency, durability and colour quality depend on the exact product, driver, thermal management and installation rather than COB technology alone.

05Does COB LED strip produce a completely dot-free light?

COB tape normally reduces visible LED points dramatically, but a completely uniform finished appearance depends on viewing distance, the tape construction, profile depth, diffuser and reflective surroundings. Very shallow profiles, exposed solder joints and polished worktops can still reveal changes in brightness. For the smoothest result, use a suitable aluminium housing with an opal diffuser and test a sample in the actual setting.

06What is the difference between COB and SMD LED strip?

SMD strips use individually packaged LED components placed at intervals, which can appear as separate dots without sufficient diffusion. COB strips group many small chips densely under a continuous phosphor layer, producing a smoother visible line. Neither is automatically superior in lumens per watt or lifespan: compare measured output, wattage, CRI, IP rating, manufacturer data and warranty for the products in question.

07Is COB LED strip more energy efficient than SMD strip?

Not necessarily. Efficiency is measured in lumens per watt, not simply by whether a strip uses COB or SMD construction. Two products drawing 11W/m can differ significantly in light output. Compare verified lumens per metre, power consumption, colour temperature and driver efficiency before deciding which installation will cost less to run.

08Is COB LED strip brighter than standard LED strip?

Brightness cannot be determined from LED type alone. Compare lumens per metre at the same colour temperature, installed diffuser and power input. A high-output SMD strip may be brighter than a low-power COB strip, while COB can look smoother at close range. Choose task lighting on required illuminance and beam placement, not on the word COB alone.

09What is the difference between COB, neon flex and conventional LED strip?

COB is a flexible, densely populated LED circuit that creates a near-continuous light line. Standard SMD tape commonly shows discrete LED points. LED neon flex is a strip enclosed within a shaped diffuser or silicone jacket to create a wider, often more weather-resistant luminous surface. Neon flex bends only in the direction specified by its manufacturer; IP protection and suitability must be verified for each product.

10Can single colour COB LED strip change colour?

No. A 3000K strip remains warm white, a 4000K strip remains neutral white and a 6500K strip remains cool white. A compatible PWM dimmer can vary intensity, but it cannot alter the LEDs’ native colour temperature. For adjustable warm-to-cool white, purchase a CCT tunable-white strip with its matching controller, rather than a single-colour strip.

TOPIC 02 / 10 • QUESTIONS 11–020

Choosing and buying COB LED strip

11What is the best COB LED strip lighting available in the UK?

The best choice is the strip that matches the project requirements. For domestic ambience, 3000K is usually suitable; for worktops and general task lighting, 4000K is a strong all-round option; for a crisp workshop look, choose 6500K if that is the desired appearance. Check voltage, output, IP rating, tape width, driver sizing and warranty. Manningham offers 24V single-colour COB strips in all three temperatures.

12Where can I buy high-quality single colour COB LED strip in the UK?

Manningham Lighting & Electrical sells dedicated 24V single-colour COB LED strips through its UK online shop, including 3000K warm white, 4000K neutral white and 6500K cool white versions. Purchase the correct 24V constant-voltage driver, compatible dimmer where required and aluminium profile separately unless a particular bundle explicitly includes them. Always check the current listing before ordering.

13What should I look for when buying COB LED strip?

First confirm the voltage, wattage per metre and total required length. Next choose colour temperature, actual light output, colour rendering, IP rating for the environment, strip width, cutting interval and maximum permissible electrically fed run. Check whether a driver, lead, adhesive, connectors, diffuser and warranty are included. For visible installation, evaluate the finished light line inside the chosen aluminium profile.

14What is the best COB LED strip for a kitchen?

A 4000K 24V COB strip is a useful starting point for under-cabinet task lighting because its neutral white appearance keeps worktops clear and balanced. Choose 3000K where warm ambience is more important or where the other lighting is warm. Mount the strip near the front of the cabinet in an aluminium profile to reduce shadows cast by the user. Keep drivers accessible and away from wet or high-heat locations.

15What is the best COB LED strip for bedroom lighting?

For a comfortable bedroom atmosphere, 3000K warm white is generally the preferred option among these three fixed-colour choices. Conceal the strip behind a headboard, under a bed frame, along a coving detail or inside a recessed profile so the LEDs are not directly visible from the bed. A compatible dimmer helps reduce brightness at night; use a protected, ventilated profile and avoid bedding contact.

16What is the best COB LED strip for commercial lighting?

Choose by the task and required lighting levels rather than by venue type. A 4000K strip is often appropriate for work areas and retail counters; 3000K is popular for hospitality ambience, while 6500K can suit specific technical or utility spaces. Commercial specifications should also establish CRI, delivered lumens, expected hours, service accessibility, maintenance intervals and emergency-lighting obligations where relevant.

17What is the difference between cheap and premium COB LED strip?

Potential differences include consistency of colour between batches, copper thickness, accurate power ratings, LED binning, adhesive quality, CRI, thermal design, product testing and warranty support. Price alone does not prove any of these attributes. Ask for published specifications, confirm compatibility with the planned housing and driver, and test a representative length before a large installation.

18How much does single colour COB LED strip cost per metre?

The cost per metre depends on reel size, brand, rating and included accessories; prices change. Calculate the true project price by adding strip, 24V driver, dimmer if used, aluminium profile, diffuser, connectors, cable and installation labour, then divide by the installed metres. The price displayed on a product listing may be for a selectable roll length rather than a single metre.

19Can I buy COB LED strip cut to a custom length?

COB strip can be cut into suitable sections at its manufacturer-marked cutting points. A custom size therefore needs to be rounded to the nearest valid segment and fitted with appropriate leads or connectors. Confirm whether a supplier offers a cut-and-terminated service; do not assume that a reel product includes bespoke cutting, soldering or sealed waterproof terminations.

20Can I buy COB LED strip with a compatible driver and accessories?

Yes, build a complete system by matching a 24V constant-voltage driver to the strip’s wattage, adding a single-colour 24V dimmer if necessary, and selecting connectors and aluminium housing for the tape width. Verify whether the individual listing includes any extras: the three featured strip pages should be treated as strip-only unless the selected option explicitly states otherwise.

TOPIC 03 / 10 • QUESTIONS 21–030

Voltage, wattage and drivers

21Is 12V or 24V COB LED strip better?

For many longer architectural runs, 24V is practical because an equivalent-wattage installation carries half the current of a 12V system, reducing voltage-drop pressure for the same cable resistance. The correct choice still depends on the strip’s rated voltage, feed arrangement, cutting increments and availability of drivers. Never connect a 12V strip to 24V or vice versa. The featured Manningham tape is 24V.

22What is the maximum length of 24V COB LED strip?

There is no universal maximum length. The permitted length fed from one end depends on PCB copper width, wattage per metre, thermal conditions and manufacturer guidance. A 10m purchase or 100m roll option is not a promise of one uninterrupted power feed. For a long installation, divide the load into separately fed sections and check voltage drop, cable gauge, controller ratings and manufacturer limits.

23What power supply do I need for 5 metres of COB LED strip?

The featured Manningham strips use 11W per metre, so 5m consumes 5 × 11 = 55W nominally. A regulated 24V constant-voltage driver rated around 75W or greater provides useful headroom, provided it is suitable for the enclosure and ambient temperature. With a dimmer, ensure both dimmer and driver handle the total load. The 55W example applies only to 11W/m tape.

24How do I calculate the correct LED driver wattage?

Multiply installed metres by the specified watts per metre. For 8m of 11W/m tape, the load is 88W; adding roughly 20–25% planning headroom suggests a driver of at least about 110W, so the next appropriately rated standard size may be 120W or more. Check the driver’s continuous-output rating, derating, cable runs and dimming requirements. Headroom is a planning rule, not a substitute for manufacturer specifications.

25Can I use a 12V power supply with a 24V COB LED strip?

No. A 24V constant-voltage strip is designed for a regulated 24V DC supply. Feeding it 12V will generally cause poor or no illumination; using an overvoltage supply can damage the strip and create overheating hazards. Read both labels before connecting and verify polarity. A compatible dimmer also needs to support the chosen 24V system.

26Does COB LED strip require a constant-voltage driver?

The featured 24V COB strips require a regulated 24V constant-voltage DC power supply. A constant-current LED driver, a 12V transformer or a traditional halogen electronic transformer is not automatically compatible. The supply must support the installed wattage, protection requirements and any chosen control method. Keep mains connections inside suitable electrical enclosures.

27Can I use one LED driver for multiple COB LED strips?

Yes, if the driver is 24V constant-voltage and its continuous current and wattage ratings cover the combined parallel loads. Run separate suitably sized cables from a distribution point to each branch where practical rather than chaining long, high-load strips end-to-end. For example, three 2m sections at 11W/m total 66W; include driver headroom and check branch protection and dimmer capacity.

28How do I avoid voltage drop on long COB LED strip runs?

Use 24V tape, appropriately sized copper supply cables, shorter electrical feed lengths and parallel home-run feeds or manufacturer-approved power injection. Calculate load current as watts divided by volts: a 55W, 24V section draws about 2.29A. Position the driver sensibly and measure voltage under load at the far end. Never exceed the strip manufacturer’s permitted feed length.

29How much electricity does COB LED strip use per metre?

The featured strip is rated at 11W per metre at full output, which is 0.011kWh per hour per metre before driver losses. A 5m installation uses approximately 0.055kWh per hour at the tape; four hours daily uses about 6.6kWh of tape energy in 30 days. Actual mains consumption is higher because the driver is not perfectly efficient and may vary with dimming.

30Can a COB LED strip be powered directly from 230V mains?

Not the featured 24V strips. They must connect to a suitable isolated 24V DC constant-voltage driver, which in turn connects to the 230V electrical supply. Direct mains connection can destroy the strip and create severe electric-shock and fire risks. Mains wiring, protective devices and any required electrical work should be completed by a competent installer in accordance with applicable UK rules.

TOPIC 04 / 10 • QUESTIONS 31–040

Cutting, wiring and mounting

31How do you install COB LED strip lights step by step?

Plan the run and accessible driver location; measure the required length and identify marked cutting points. Isolate the supply, cut only where permitted, terminate the tape using compatible connectors or correctly soldered joints, and mount it in a clean aluminium profile. Connect with correct polarity through the 24V driver and optional single-colour controller, test before closing the diffuser, then secure cables and leave ventilation and service access.

32Can you cut COB LED strip anywhere?

No. Even though COB light looks continuous, the flexible circuit is divided into electrical segments. Cut only at the printed cutting marks identified by the manufacturer. Cutting through an unmarked portion may damage components or disable a section. For precision joinery, measure the available recess first and adjust the finished length to suit the nearest permitted segment.

33How do you reconnect COB LED strip after cutting it?

First identify positive and negative solder pads and confirm tape width and conductor arrangement. Join sections with a connector explicitly compatible with that COB strip, or solder correctly sized insulated tails to the pads with suitable temperature control. Insulate and mechanically support every joint; add approved environmental sealing if using an appropriately rated waterproof product. Test polarity and operation before final installation.

34How do you solder wires to COB LED strip?

Isolate all power. Expose only the manufacturer-designated copper pads, lightly tin the pads and suitable flexible cable, then make a brief controlled solder joint while respecting polarity. Avoid prolonged heat, excessive solder, bridging pads or pulling on the joint. Add strain relief and insulation, then verify continuity and function at 24V. Where skill or access is limited, use compatible approved connectors or a professional installer.

35Are solderless connectors available for COB LED strip?

Yes, but the connector must fit the strip width, contact pad position, copper-track arrangement and any protective coating. Some clips intended for ordinary SMD tape will not reliably contact COB pads. Cut squarely on the marked line, insert the tape fully, close the connector and test before concealment. A mechanical joint must be strain-relieved and appropriate for the installation environment.

36How do you wire multiple COB LED strips to one power supply?

Use a regulated 24V driver and connect branches in parallel, observing positive-to-positive and negative-to-negative polarity. Sum the wattages of all sections and check the driver’s capacity, cable current ratings and any controller limitations. For long or distant branches, use individually sized feeds instead of making all current travel through the copper tracks of the first strip. Protect and label accessible joints.

37Can you connect COB LED strips around corners?

Yes. For sharp 90-degree corners, end the strip at a marked cutting point and use short flexible cable links or compatible corner connectors. Do not fold a live circuit sharply back on itself or crease the copper tracks. For gentle corners, follow the manufacturer’s minimum bend radius. Arrange the profile and diffuser so joints remain visually discreet and protected.

38Can you bend COB LED strip around curved surfaces?

Many flexible COB strips can follow gentle curves within the bending direction and minimum radius specified by the manufacturer. They must not be twisted, stretched, creased or bent sharply across their width. For complex radii, use several short sections connected with cable and mount them in a suitable curved or segmented housing. Test the lighting effect before fixing permanently.

39Do COB LED strips need an aluminium channel or profile?

An aluminium profile is strongly recommended for a durable professional installation because it supports the strip, helps conduct heat away and protects it from accidental contact. An opal diffuser also softens reflections and conceals wiring. Whether it is strictly necessary depends on the strip’s manufacturer and mounting conditions. Never enclose a high-power strip in insulating material without a verified thermal design.

40How do you mount COB LED strip securely to a ceiling or wall?

Fix an appropriate aluminium extrusion firmly to the structure with suitable screws or clips, allowing for cable exits and serviceable end caps. Clean and dry its interior, apply the tape without stretching, route wires without sharp edges and fit the diffuser. Bare self-adhesive tape on dusty plaster, textured paint or warm timber is less dependable. Keep drivers accessible and comply with ceiling fire and electrical requirements.

TOPIC 05 / 10 • QUESTIONS 41–050

White colour temperatures and CRI

41What colour temperatures are available in single colour COB strip?

Common fixed white options include extra warm 2700K, warm 3000K, neutral 4000K and cool or daylight 6000–6500K, depending on the manufacturer. The featured Manningham range offers 3000K, 4000K and 6500K as distinct products. Select one colour for each visual zone unless a deliberate contrast is planned; a single-colour strip cannot switch between temperatures.

42What is the difference between 2700K and 3000K COB LED strip?

Both are warm white, but 2700K generally looks more golden, resembling many traditional warm lamps, whereas 3000K appears slightly cleaner and less amber. For cosy bedrooms or heritage interiors, 2700K may suit; for modern homes and hospitality, 3000K is a versatile warm option. Compare samples beside existing luminaires because diffuser materials and surroundings affect appearance.

43Should I choose 3000K or 4000K LED strip for a kitchen?

Choose 4000K where the strip provides focused worktop task lighting and a clean neutral-white appearance. Choose 3000K where the kitchen is part of a warm living space or the aim is softer evening ambience. Both can work well; consistency with the main room lights and the kitchen finishes matters. Install close enough to the front of upper units to limit shadows.

44Is 4000K COB LED strip suitable for office lighting?

Yes. 4000K produces balanced neutral-white light that is commonly chosen for office counters, shelves and architectural accents. However, desk and whole-room lighting must also meet appropriate illuminance, glare, flicker and visual comfort requirements; an LED strip alone may not provide adequate general office lighting. Use a diffuser and position the source outside direct sightlines and screen reflections.

45Is 6000K or 6500K COB strip suitable for a garage?

Yes, where a crisp, cool daylight-white appearance is preferred. It can work for workbench edges, shelving and visual details, but colour temperature alone does not establish brightness or suitability for precision work. Choose an appropriate lighting level, prevent glare and use a robust housing away from impact, moisture or vehicle contact. The featured 6500K strip is IP20 and therefore for dry indoor conditions.

46Which COB LED strip colour is best for bedrooms?

3000K warm white is usually the safest starting point among the featured fixed-colour products because it provides a softer, more relaxing appearance. Use concealed placement and a compatible low-flicker dimmer for adjustable evening brightness. A 4000K version may suit a dressing or task area but can feel comparatively clinical when used as the bedroom’s main mood-lighting colour.

47What colour LED strip makes a room look brighter?

At the same measured lumen output, cooler white light may look crisper to some viewers, especially against pale finishes, but Kelvin is not a measure of brightness. Actual perceived brightness depends on lumen output, mounting height, room reflectance, glare and light distribution. Compare lumens per metre and test 3000K, 4000K and 6500K samples rather than assuming 6500K necessarily produces more light.

48What is CRI in COB LED strip lighting?

CRI means Colour Rendering Index and describes how faithfully a light source renders a standard set of colours compared with a reference source. A general CRI of 80 or above is common for routine lighting, while CRI 90 or above is often preferred for clothing, food, artwork and premium interiors. Check the specific product datasheet; neither COB construction nor Kelvin guarantees a particular CRI.

49Is CRI 90 better than CRI 80 for COB LED strip?

For colour-sensitive applications, CRI 90 generally renders colours more accurately than CRI 80, although the overall CRI number does not tell the whole story about saturated reds and other hues. CRI 80 may be adequate for basic circulation or indirect mood light. Compare output, efficiency and any available R9/TM-30 data when selecting display or hospitality lighting.

50Can I change the colour temperature of a single colour COB strip?

Not electronically. A fixed 3000K or 4000K strip can be dimmed but remains essentially the same colour temperature. Filters or diffusers might alter its appearance slightly while wasting light, but they do not convert it into a tunable-white product. To change between warm and cool white, use a dedicated dual-channel CCT strip and matching controller.

TOPIC 06 / 10 • QUESTIONS 51–060

Waterproofing and outdoor use

51Is COB LED strip lighting waterproof?

Only when the specific product has an appropriate IP protection rating and suitable sealed terminations. The featured 24V 3000K, 4000K and 6500K Manningham strips are IP20, intended for dry indoor use, and are not waterproof. For damp, splash-exposed or outdoor applications, select a separately specified protected strip and ensure connectors, drivers, housings and cable entries match the environment.

52What does IP65 mean on COB LED strip lighting?

IP65 indicates dust-tight protection and resistance to water jets under the relevant test conditions. It does not mean that a strip can be submerged, used without sealing cut ends or fitted anywhere outdoors irrespective of UV, heat or chemicals. The rating applies to the product as tested; field cuts and connectors can compromise it unless sealed using the manufacturer-approved method.

53What is the difference between IP67 and IP68 COB strip?

IP67 includes protection against temporary immersion under defined test conditions, while IP68 indicates immersion protection to conditions agreed by the manufacturer. IP68 is not automatically a longer-life rating, and neither rating by itself guarantees UV, chlorine, salt, abrasion or permanent submerged suitability. Examine the exact depth/duration specification and check every joint and cable entry.

54Can I install COB LED strip outside in the rain?

Only use a strip expressly rated and approved for the outdoor conditions and complete the installation with suitable sealed joints, cable entries and outdoor-rated power equipment. The three featured IP20 Manningham strips should never be installed in rainfall or exposed external positions. Provide drainage, avoid water traps and have external mains wiring designed and installed to applicable UK requirements.

55Can waterproof COB LED strip be installed in a bathroom?

A correctly rated strip can be used where the installation complies with the location’s bathroom zones, electrical protection and manufacturer instructions. The IP20 strips featured in this guide are not specified for wet or splash-exposed areas. Bathroom circuits, RCD protection, driver position and equipment suitability must be assessed against BS 7671 requirements by a competent electrician.

56Can COB LED strip be used in a shower enclosure?

Do not put the featured IP20 strips in a shower enclosure. A suitable purpose-designed low-voltage lighting system may be possible only with the correct bathroom-zone suitability, appropriate IP protection, driver location and electrical design. Water ingress at a cut end or connector can defeat the rating of the main strip, so the full system—not just the tape—must be approved for the installation.

57Can COB LED strip be installed in a garden?

Yes, where the selected product is expressly intended for outdoor use and its IP rating, UV resistance, temperature range and mechanical protection suit the site. Conceal cables in safe routes, keep connectors watertight, and use a compatible protected driver with electrical protection. The featured IP20 range is not a garden product; choose an outdoor-specific alternative.

58Can I use COB LED strip for decking or pathway lighting?

Only if the strip and housing are designed for exterior traffic-adjacent conditions, water exposure and expected physical loads. Provide a recessed or protective channel that does not create a trip hazard, and ensure drainage and serviceable sealed ends. For in-ground or drive-over applications, choose a purpose-built load-rated system rather than ordinary indoor tape or decorative aluminium profile.

59How do you waterproof cut ends of COB LED strip?

For a waterproof-rated product, use the manufacturer’s specified end cap, sealant, encapsulation or connector system and follow its cleaning, curing and testing instructions. A cut exposes electrical contacts and can invalidate the original IP rating. Ordinary tape or household silicone applied casually is not a verified seal. Never claim an IP20 strip has become IP68 merely because sealant was added.

60What is the best waterproof COB LED strip for UK weather?

Choose a product independently specified for the actual exposure, with an appropriate IP rating, outdoor UV and temperature suitability, proven cable termination method and realistic warranty terms. For exposed architectural work, consider ingress paths, standing water and corrosion. Compare complete systems rather than choosing solely by a higher IP number; the featured IP20 single-colour strips are for dry indoor use.

TOPIC 07 / 10 • QUESTIONS 61–070

Dimming and smart controls

61Can you dim single colour COB LED strip?

Yes, when used with a compatible single-colour 24V LED dimming controller or an approved dimmable driver/control combination. The featured 24V tape itself does not require a CCT or RGB controller. Match controller voltage and current to the full load, test the low-end dimming range, and confirm there is no visible flicker or interference.

62What type of dimmer works with 24V COB LED strip?

A suitable 24V constant-voltage single-channel PWM controller is a common solution. Install it on the DC side of a compatible 24V driver and respect the controller’s maximum current. A mains wall dimmer may work only if the selected LED driver specifically supports that dimming method; do not place an ordinary mains dimmer into an incompatible circuit.

63Can I dim COB LED strip using an ordinary wall switch?

An ordinary wall switch usually turns the driver on and off; it does not vary brightness. To dim the tape, use a compatible LED dimmer/controller or a driver designed for the intended wall-dimming protocol. A standard rotary mains dimmer connected to a non-dimmable 24V power supply can cause buzzing, flashing or equipment damage. Verify compatibility before wiring.

64What is PWM dimming for COB LED strips?

PWM means pulse-width modulation. A controller switches the DC output on and off rapidly and alters the proportion of time it is on, changing the apparent brightness while maintaining the selected 24V system design. Poor controller frequency or compatibility can introduce camera banding or perceptible flicker. Specify a suitable controller and check light quality at low settings.

65Can I control COB LED strip from my phone?

Yes, by adding a compatible smart single-colour 24V controller that supports the chosen phone app and network or radio ecosystem. The LED tape itself has no built-in Wi-Fi. Confirm the controller is rated for total current, whether a gateway is needed, and how the lights behave if internet access is lost. Provide local isolation and an accessible driver.

66Can single colour COB LED strip work with Alexa?

Yes, if a compatible smart 24V single-colour controller or smart-enabled driver supports Alexa through its own integration. The featured strips do not connect to Alexa directly. Pair the compatible controller according to its manufacturer instructions and set up the voice assistant in the supported app. Select a controller with enough output capacity for every connected strip.

67Can I connect COB LED strip to a motion sensor?

Yes. A suitably rated sensor can switch a compatible 24V supply/control circuit or command a controller, depending on the sensor design. This is useful inside wardrobes, under beds and on stair lighting. Check load ratings, sensor detection range, timeout, standby consumption and safe access; always follow the wiring diagram for that exact sensor.

68Can COB LED strips be controlled by a smart home system?

Yes, using a supported intermediary such as a 24V PWM controller with Zigbee, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or an automation-interface module. The strip remains ordinary low-voltage single-colour LED tape; the controller supplies intelligence. Check ecosystem support, power sizing, dimming quality and fallback operation before integrating multiple rooms or long cable runs.

69Why does my COB LED strip flicker when dimmed?

Common causes are an incompatible dimmer/driver pairing, a driver operating outside its valid load range, PWM characteristics, unstable connections or insufficient supply capacity. Check the controller’s voltage/current ratings and test at full brightness. Correct any loose terminals or wiring faults with power isolated. Persistent flicker should be assessed by an electrician or supplier rather than tolerated.

70Can I control several COB LED strips with one dimmer?

Yes, if all strips use a compatible voltage and the total current stays within the dimmer output rating. Multiple runs can be connected in parallel, often via a distribution arrangement, and powered by one or more suitable drivers as supported by the controller design. For large installations, use matched amplifiers or multiple control channels rather than exceeding one controller’s rated load.

TOPIC 08 / 10 • QUESTIONS 71–080

Home and commercial applications

71How do I install COB LED strip under kitchen cabinets?

Fix a slim aluminium profile on the underside of each cabinet, usually toward the front edge to wash the worktop and reduce user shadows. Route low-voltage leads discreetly through protected holes to an accessible 24V driver, calculate the total wattage and connect sections in parallel where appropriate. Clean the extrusion before sticking in the strip, test all sections, then clip in the diffuser. Keep components clear of sinks, steam and hob heat.

72What COB LED strip is best for kitchen plinth lighting?

3000K creates a subtle, warm floating-cabinet effect, while 4000K looks cleaner and brighter. Recess a downward or outward-facing aluminium profile behind the plinth toe-kick so the strip is not directly visible at standing height. Protect the run from wet mopping, kicks and cleaning products; IP20 tape should not be placed where water or moisture will reach it.

73Can COB LED strip be installed inside wardrobes?

Yes, dry indoor wardrobes are suitable for 24V IP20 tape when it is installed securely in a protected profile with correct heat management. Fit vertical strips behind door stiles or under shelves and connect a suitable door sensor if required. Keep the tape and driver away from clothing, allow air circulation and ensure cables cannot be pinched by sliding doors or drawers.

74How do I use COB LED strip for ceiling cove lighting?

Position an upward-facing aluminium channel in a stable coving trough or perimeter ledge, so the LED source is concealed from normal viewpoints and throws light across the ceiling. Keep a consistent setback from the wall and ceiling for a smooth wash. Plan access to drivers, use separate feeds for long perimeters and make sure all materials, cable routes and penetrations satisfy the ceiling’s fire and electrical design.

75Can I use COB LED strip behind a television?

Yes, for indirect accent light behind a TV or media wall. Attach an aluminium profile to a secure, ventilated part of the wall structure or cabinet rather than blocking the television’s ventilation. Aim the light at the wall to avoid visible bright spots on the screen. Choose 3000K for a warmer lounge or 4000K for a neutral effect, then test brightness with the TV on.

76Is COB LED strip suitable for stair lighting?

Yes, it is effective for concealed step-edge, under-nosing and handrail illumination. Use an impact-resistant, securely fixed profile with an anti-glare diffuser and protect cables from foot traffic. A motion sensor can provide convenient low-level operation, but decorative LED strip should not be treated as a substitute for any required safe-access or emergency lighting. Keep the finished profile flush with no trip edges.

77Can COB LED strip be used for shop display lighting?

Yes. COB is useful for even light under shelves, inside showcases and across retail joinery because discrete LED points are less visible. Choose colour temperature and verified CRI for the merchandise, use diffusers to prevent reflections and route accessible wiring behind removable panels. For valuable or heat-sensitive goods, assess illumination, ultraviolet characteristics and heat rather than relying on a wattage figure alone.

78Is COB LED strip suitable for bathroom mirror lighting?

It can be suitable only when the complete installation, including strip, enclosure, driver and location, meets bathroom-zone and moisture protection requirements. A properly rated mirror or vanity system is preferable where splashes or condensation are expected. The three IP20 featured strips are restricted to dry indoor environments and should not be assumed suitable adjacent to basins or showers.

79What LED strip is best for illuminating shelves?

COB tape in aluminium housing is a good choice because the light appears even across a shelf edge. For living-room displays, 3000K flatters timber and ornaments; 4000K offers a more neutral retail or utility look. Position the profile at the front underside to illuminate objects or at the back for a glow. Shield it from direct eye view and keep wiring accessible.

80How do I achieve a continuous line of light without visible LED dots?

Combine high-density COB tape with a compatible aluminium profile and opal diffuser, keep the tape straight and use consistent spacing to reflective surfaces. Choose a profile sufficiently deep to blend local variation and hide connectors. Test a short sample at the actual viewing angle before routing the entire project. Dotless appearance is a system effect and cannot be guaranteed by the strip specification alone.

TOPIC 09 / 10 • QUESTIONS 81–090

Troubleshooting and reliability

81Why is my COB LED strip flickering?

Start by checking that the driver outputs the correct regulated voltage and has enough continuous wattage. Flickering can also be caused by unstable dimmers, loose solder joints, high-resistance connectors or moisture damage. Isolate power before inspecting connections and check voltage under load with suitable equipment. Replace damaged parts rather than repeatedly re-energising a circuit that arcs or overheats.

82Why is only half of my COB LED strip working?

A failed internal segment, cut-point fault, damaged copper track or defective joint can interrupt part of the run. If the first section works but the remainder is dark, inspect the boundary for physical damage after isolating the supply. Verify voltage and polarity using safe procedures. Replace the damaged marked segment or remake the faulty joint, keeping within the manufacturer’s repair instructions.

83Why has my COB LED strip stopped working?

Common causes include loss of mains power to the driver, a failed driver, reversed polarity after rewiring, open connectors, damaged tape or controller failure. Confirm the circuit is safely isolated before checking components; a competent person can then measure the driver’s DC output and test a short known-good section. Never bypass electrical protection or connect the 24V strip directly to mains to test it.

84Why is my COB LED strip dimmer at one end?

The most common explanation on long runs is voltage drop caused by the resistance of the strip’s copper tracks and feed cables. Measure voltage at both ends while the lights are operating, check current and total run length, then shorten sections or add properly sized parallel supply feeds. Dirty connectors and undersized drivers can contribute. Do not assume a longer reel can be powered from only one end.

85Why does my LED strip get hot?

LED tape converts some electrical input into heat; warmth is normal but excessive temperature reduces reliability and may damage nearby materials. Use the correct 24V supply, avoid overdriving, install in a thermally suitable aluminium profile and leave ventilation. Do not bury active tape in insulation or bundle it tightly while operating. Switch off if adhesive chars, discolours or gives off an unusual smell.

86Why is my COB LED strip changing colour or turning yellow?

A gradual shift can result from LED/phosphor ageing, persistent overheating, incompatible chemicals, moisture or a discoloured diffuser. Check whether the change is in the lit output, the coating or the plastic cover. Review operating temperatures and power conditions; clean only with approved products. Replace visibly damaged tape and correct heat or moisture causes before installing a new section.

87Why is the adhesive on my COB LED strip peeling off?

Adhesive can fail on dusty plaster, damp wood, greasy cabinet panels, rough paint or surfaces that become too warm. Remove loose tape with power isolated, prepare a smooth, clean, dry surface and mount the strip inside aluminium extrusion. Secure the extrusion mechanically rather than relying entirely on adhesive. Avoid heavy cable tension that pulls at the ends of the tape.

88How do I find a faulty connection in COB LED strip?

With the circuit isolated, inspect each termination for broken solder, loose clips, corrosion, dark marks and trapped cable. A competent technician can check continuity and then measure voltage under controlled operating conditions to identify a high-resistance joint. If wiggling the cable changes brightness, stop using the circuit and remake or replace the connection with suitable strain relief.

89Can damaged COB LED strip be repaired?

Localised faults can sometimes be repaired by removing an entire damaged segment at valid cutting points and joining the sound sections with proper connections. Damage spread along the copper tracks, overheating, water ingress or widespread chip failure usually makes replacement the safer option. The repaired assembly must preserve polarity, mechanical protection, thermal contact and any required IP sealing.

90How can I extend the lifespan of COB LED strip lighting?

Use the specified 24V driver with adequate capacity, an appropriate aluminium profile and good ventilation. Avoid overheating, moisture exposure, excessive bending and sustained overcurrent; keep joins secure and electrically protected. Dimming may reduce operating heat, although the effect depends on the controller. The realistic service life depends on the particular product and its test data, not a generic COB lifespan claim.

TOPIC 10 / 10 • QUESTIONS 91–100

Safety, operating costs and compliance

91How long does COB LED strip last?

LED strip lifetime varies widely with junction temperature, product quality, driver stability and operating hours. A quoted life such as 15,000 or 50,000 hours is a manufacturer-specific rating under defined conditions, not a guarantee for every COB strip. Ask for the actual model’s rated-life information and expect poor thermal design or moisture damage to shorten service considerably.

92Is COB LED strip safe to leave switched on overnight?

A correctly designed, appropriately protected installation can run for extended periods if the strip and driver are rated for the intended duty. It still needs proper ventilation, cable protection and thermal management. Avoid tape in contact with bedding, loose fabrics or insulation, and do not leave an installation operating if it runs excessively hot, flickers abnormally or shows damaged wiring.

93Can COB LED strip cause a fire if installed incorrectly?

Yes. Incorrect power supplies, overloaded cable or connectors, poor joints, overheating in insulation and unprotected mains connections can create fire risks. Use correctly sized conductors, appropriate fusing/protection, secure joints, ventilated aluminium mounting and competent mains installation. An LED strip is low-voltage on its output side, but the driver is connected to hazardous mains voltage.

94Does COB LED strip need ventilation?

It needs a suitable path for heat dissipation. Aluminium extrusion and adequate air space help avoid heat building up around the strip and power supply. Enclosing a powered reel, covering it with insulation or sealing a driver into an airtight cavity can lead to overheating unless the components are explicitly designed for that condition. Observe every driver’s permitted ambient temperature and mounting instructions.

95How much does it cost to run 5 metres of COB LED strip?

Five metres of the featured 11W/m tape consumes around 55W at full power. At an illustrative electricity price of 25p/kWh, four hours per day for 30 days uses 6.6kWh at the tape, costing about £1.65 before driver losses. Multiply your actual kWh tariff by measured mains energy for a better estimate; the 25p figure is an example, not a quoted current tariff.

96Is COB LED strip suitable for continuous commercial operation?

It can be if the specific tape, 24V power supply, controller and enclosure are rated for the intended duty cycle, temperatures and maintenance regime. Continuous-use designs should include heat management, reliable power and accessible replacement points. Check product lifetime data and installation derating rather than assuming any domestic strip is automatically rated for 24-hour commercial service.

97What warranty should I expect on COB LED strip?

Warranty periods depend on the specific seller and product, so check the live product terms and any exclusions for modified or improperly installed tape. Keep evidence of the purchase, driver choice, installed environment and fault symptoms. A long warranty is useful but cannot compensate for the wrong voltage, inadequate heat dissipation or using an IP20 strip where moisture is present.

98Can COB LED strip be installed on wood or plasterboard?

It may be mounted to suitably designed surfaces when the manufacturer permits, but use an aluminium extrusion for thermal conduction, physical stability and separation from vulnerable finishes. Do not embed bare powered tape directly in plaster or combustible insulation. Mechanical fixings must suit the substrate, and concealed cable routes and drivers must meet relevant electrical and fire-safety requirements.

99What UK electrical regulations apply to LED strip installations?

The mains side of the LED driver and any fixed wiring must comply with applicable UK electrical safety requirements, including BS 7671 where relevant, and building regulations for the location and type of work. Bathrooms, outdoor circuits, rented premises and commercial buildings may impose additional requirements. Use a competent electrician for mains changes and any work requiring inspection, testing or notification.

100Is COB LED strip worth the extra cost compared with standard LED strip?

COB is often worth considering when individual light points would be visible, especially in shallow profiles, joinery, display shelving and reflected worktop lighting. For fully concealed indirect runs, a suitable SMD strip may deliver the desired effect at lower cost. Compare complete installed cost, light output, CRI, dimming and reliability; the correct choice is based on the finished lighting result.

1. Plan the layout and lighting direction

Measure the underside of every wall cabinet separately and decide where vertical cabinet divisions interrupt the line. Set a slim profile near the cabinet front edge, normally behind the lip, so the light falls over the preparation area rather than down the splashback alone.

2. Fit the profile, wire and test

Drill discreet, protected lead exits at cabinet ends and feed each section toward a serviceable driver location above or within a suitable ventilated cabinet void. Fix profiles mechanically; clean, cut and install the strip only at its marked pads. Wire the runs in parallel with correct polarity, test, then install diffusers and end caps.

3. Safety and maintenance considerations

Avoid the steam path of kettles, sinks and hot cooking equipment. IP20 means dry indoor use only; choose correctly protected equipment if splashing or condensation is likely. Place the driver where it remains accessible without dismantling permanent cabinetry.

1. Plan the layout and lighting direction

Determine whether the objective is an upward ceiling wash, floating ceiling perimeter or recessed luminous line. Build a continuous, level ledge or aluminium channel that blocks direct sight of the strip from standing and seated positions. Test the setback and distance from the ceiling on a short section to avoid bright scalloping.

2. Fit the profile, wire and test

Divide long perimeters into calculated 24V electrical sections; route parallel cable feeds back to accessible drivers instead of relying on a single long copper-track run. Install profiles before final decoration, leave diffuser and strip replaceable, check for shadow lines at corners and test at full and dimmed brightness.

3. Safety and maintenance considerations

Suspended ceiling grids, fire barriers, acoustic tiles and plenums may have restrictions on fixings and electrical equipment. Do not place drivers loose above inaccessible ceiling panels or compromise any fire-rated construction.

1. Plan the layout and lighting direction

For floating-island effects, conceal the profile under the overhang or behind the toe-kick line. A shallow recessed channel gives a crisp outline; set it far enough back to prevent direct glare when seated. For practical food preparation, a separate 4000K task-lighting layer may be more suitable than warm ambience alone.

2. Fit the profile, wire and test

Route the 24V cable through a protected island service void before the countertop is fitted. Keep the supply away from sink plumbing and hot appliances, fit aluminium profiles to secure joinery and connect measured sections to a correctly sized accessible driver. Test the output after the actual worktop material is installed because stone and polished surfaces reflect differently.

3. Safety and maintenance considerations

Observe manufacturer requirements for stone, solid-surface and worktop cutting. IP20 should not be located where spills or frequent wet cleaning will reach the tape.

1. Plan the layout and lighting direction

Set out lighting zones using the room’s task, circulation and presentation needs. COB can provide elegant perimeter washes, reception details and shelving illumination, but should not be assumed to deliver sufficient general illuminance or low glare for office desk work. Use photometric design and match the colour temperature across visible areas.

2. Fit the profile, wire and test

Coordinate long-profile lengths, expansion allowance, driver distribution and maintenance access with the ceiling contractor. Feed calculated parallel 24V runs, specify suitable commercial-grade dimmers or controls and test the appearance from main viewing angles. Label driver locations and create an as-installed circuit schedule.

3. Safety and maintenance considerations

Apply relevant workplace lighting, emergency-lighting, fire, electrical and building requirements; use documented product ratings for sustained operating hours.

1. Plan the layout and lighting direction

The featured strips are 24V, so they must not be connected directly to a typical nominal 12V leisure-battery circuit. Select an appropriately rated, electrically suitable DC–DC converter with regulated 24V output, or use a native 12V LED strip instead. Verify the vehicle’s actual supply voltage range, transient behaviour and battery power budget.

2. Fit the profile, wire and test

Secure protected aluminium profile inside lockers or above galley worktops, route automotive-suitable cable through grommeted openings and provide correctly selected branch fusing close to the source as the vehicle electrical design requires. Prevent movement and vibration from loading connectors, confirm converter capacity, then test under charging and discharging conditions.

3. Safety and maintenance considerations

Vehicle wiring demands vibration-resistant connections, suitable protective devices and appropriate electrical installation skills. Keep equipment clear of gas systems, hot hobs, wet compartments and flammable insulation. A vehicle circuit is not a domestic 230V wiring system.
