LED Strip Controller Buying Guide, Compatibility & FAQs
What Is an LED Strip Light Controller?
An LED strip light controller is an electrical control device used to adjust the output of compatible LED strip lighting. Depending on the controller and LED strip, it can provide brightness adjustment, colour selection, tunable-white control and preset lighting effects.
Controllers are commonly installed between a compatible low-voltage DC power supply and LED strip tape. Many systems operate at 12V or 24V DC, although supported voltages and wiring arrangements vary by model.
The correct controller must match the LED strip's operating voltage, channel configuration, control method and total electrical load.
Explore Our LED Strip Dimmers & Controllers
Single Colour LED Strip Dimmers
Single-colour LED strip dimmers allow brightness adjustment on compatible fixed-colour LED tape, including warm white, neutral white and cool white installations.
These are popular for kitchen cabinets, under-shelf lighting, ceiling coving, wardrobes, bedrooms and media walls where adjustable brightness is required.
Depending on the product, dimming can be controlled through a rotary module, remote control or touch interface.
RGB LED Strip Controllers
RGB LED strip controllers control the red, green and blue channels of compatible RGB LED tape.
They allow users to select colours, adjust brightness and access supported colour-changing effects.
RGB controllers are frequently used for gaming rooms, television media walls, bars, restaurants, entertainment spaces and decorative commercial lighting.
A standard RGB controller is not automatically suitable for RGBW or RGB+CCT LED tape.
RGBW LED Strip Controllers
RGBW LED controllers are intended for compatible strips with red, green, blue and dedicated white lighting channels.
This allows users to control colour-changing lighting while also accessing a dedicated white channel where supported.
Check whether the LED strip uses a common-positive or another wiring configuration and confirm compatibility with the selected controller.
CCT Tunable White LED Controllers
CCT LED strip controllers are designed for compatible tunable-white LED strips containing warm-white and cool-white channels.
These controllers allow the lighting colour temperature to be adjusted between the strip's supported warm and cool white limits.
CCT lighting is popular for kitchens, bedrooms, offices, hospitality and architectural installations where adjustable white lighting is desirable.
RGB+CCT LED Strip Controllers
RGB+CCT controllers are designed for compatible five-channel LED strip systems, combining RGB colour control with separate warm-white and cool-white control.
They are suitable for systems requiring decorative colour-changing lighting and adjustable white illumination from the same strip.
A controller specifically supporting the required RGB+CCT configuration must be selected. Standard three-channel RGB controllers are not sufficient.
RF Wireless LED Strip Remote Controllers
RF (radio-frequency) LED controllers use compatible wireless transmitters, such as handheld remotes or wall-mounted touch panels, to control LED strip lighting.
RF systems do not generally require direct line of sight between the transmitter and receiver. Actual operating range depends on the particular model, surrounding structure and interference.
Manningham stocks selected RF remote dimmers and touch controllers for single-colour and colour-changing LED tape.
IR LED Strip Remote Controllers
IR (infrared) LED controllers use an infrared remote and compatible receiver to adjust supported lighting settings.
Unlike typical RF systems, infrared control generally requires a suitable line of sight to the receiver.
IR controllers can provide a simple method of controlling compatible single-colour or RGB LED installations.
Wall Mounted LED Touch Controllers
Wall-mounted LED touch controllers offer convenient lighting adjustment from a fixed location.
Selected models provide touch-sensitive brightness adjustment, colour selection or wireless control when connected to compatible receivers.
These are ideal for kitchen lighting, bedrooms, media walls, commercial interiors and bespoke lighting projects.
Wi-Fi and Smart LED Strip Controllers
Selected smart LED strip controllers support app-based or wireless lighting control.
Depending on the model, supported features may include remote adjustment, lighting scenes or integration with compatible smart-home systems.
Wi-Fi connectivity, voice assistant support and other smart functions are product-specific. Check the individual listing before ordering.
LED Strip Controller Compatibility Guide
Choosing the correct controller is essential for reliable operation. The control channels must match the LED strip configuration.
| LED Strip Type | Typical Controller | Control Function |
|---|---|---|
| Single Colour | Single-channel dimmer | Brightness adjustment |
| CCT | Two-channel CCT controller | White temperature and brightness |
| RGB | Three-channel RGB controller | Colour selection and dimming |
| RGBW | Four-channel RGBW controller | RGB and dedicated white |
| RGB+CCT | Five-channel RGB+CCT controller | RGB and tunable white |
Important: This table describes typical analogue constant-voltage LED strip arrangements. Addressable pixel LED strips, constant-current lighting and specialist systems may require different controllers.
12V vs 24V LED Strip Controllers
LED controllers must be rated for the voltage of the connected lighting system.
Some controllers support both 12V and 24V DC, while others support only a specific voltage.
For example, a controller specified for 12–24V DC may be suitable for either voltage when used with the corresponding LED strip and power supply.
A controller's supported voltage range does not convert 12V into 24V. The supply voltage must still match the LED strip requirements.
How to Choose the Correct LED Dimmer Capacity
Check the maximum output current and supported load of the controller. Both the total electrical load and any individual channel limits must remain within the manufacturer's ratings.
LED strip power: 12W per metre
Installed length: 5 metres
Total load: 12W × 5m = 60W
Current: 60W ÷ 24V = 2.5A
Select a compatible controller rated above the calculated continuous load and follow the manufacturer's safety margin and derating guidance.
RGB, RGBW and RGB+CCT lighting requires attention to the total output rating and the individual channel limits. Do not assume that a controller's total current rating applies to every channel.
LED Controller Installation and Wiring
A typical low-voltage analogue LED strip control system uses the following arrangement:
Exact wiring depends on the controller model and LED strip. Some controllers use common-positive wiring with separate channel outputs, while other systems use different arrangements.
Always follow the wiring diagram supplied with the controller. Never rely solely on wire colours or assume that terminals are identical between manufacturers.
Disconnect the electrical supply before wiring. Mains-side electrical work must be carried out safely and in accordance with applicable UK electrical requirements.
Can LED Strip Controllers Be Used with COB LED Tape?
Yes. Many suitable constant-voltage LED strip controllers can be used with compatible COB LED strip lighting.
COB refers to the LED strip's construction, rather than its control-channel configuration.
For example, a 24V single-colour COB strip normally requires a suitable single-colour controller, while a 24V RGB COB strip requires compatible RGB control.
A five-channel RGB+CCT COB strip requires a controller specifically compatible with its channel and wiring arrangement.
